About us
Our motivation
We believe passionately that children and young people who miss out on good school grounds miss out on the best start in life.
School grounds play a vital role in every child's learning and development. They are unique spaces, providing safe and diverse opportunities for understanding, achievement, healthy exercise and play.
Since 1990, Learning through Landscapes has been campaigning on behalf of all children for better school grounds.
Many children in the UK have limited opportunities to learn and play outdoors in safety. Without good school grounds, they will miss out on essential opportunities to be healthy and happy in their formative years, and to gather the experiences they need to be healthy and happy as adults.
A 2003 survey of 700 schools and early years settings across the UK that have improved their outdoor spaces with the support of Learning through Landscapes shows:
- 73% have seen improved pupil behaviour
- 64% have seen reductions in bullying
- 84% have seen better social interaction
- 65% have seen attitudes towards learning improved
- 66% say school grounds improvements have increased community/parental involvement
