Programme themes

With nearly 20 years' experiences of developing school grounds programmes across the UK, Learning through Landscapes can work with partners to shape a programme which meets their priorities. Here are just a few of the issues tackled by LTL programmes so far.

Education

LTL Cymru is working closely with the Welsh Assembly Government and Countryside Council for Wales to support outdoor play and learning as part of the Foundation Phase, as well as improve school grounds for all ages.

Environment

The environment and sustainability are central to many of LTL's programmes. Research shows that involving children in planning, improving and maintaining their school grounds has a powerful effect on their environmental attitudes in later life.

Health

School grounds offer many opportunities for improving the activity levels, lifestyles and health awareness of our children today. Whether complementing the "Healthy Schools" standard, or helping schools develop Growing Clubs as part of food education, LTL Cymru continues to promote the benefits of healthy school grounds.

Social inclusion

We know from experience that through their participation in school grounds projects, children and young people feel a greater sense of ownership and responsibility. The process of change that we recommend encourages participation by the whole school community, and we have developed a number of programmes to demonstrate the impact this can have.

Our Children's Champions programme in Wales empowered groups of children with resources, tools and funding to instigate and manage changes to their school grounds. This encouraged them to consult their peers, establish needs, develop sustainable solutions and ensure that the resulting improvements were monitored and managed in the future.
